چکیده

The excited state properties of uracil, thymine and four analogous uracil compounds have been studied in acetonitrile by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy. The excited state lifetimes were measured using femtosecond UV fluorescence upconversion. The excited state lifetimes of uracil and its 1and 3-methyl substituted derivatives are well described by one ultrafast (6100 fs) component. Five substituted compounds show a more complex behavior, exhibiting longer excited state lifetimes and bi-exponential fluorescence decays. These longer decays are substantially faster in acetonitrile than in aqueous solution showing that the excited state deactivation mechanism is in part governed by the solvent. 2006 Elsevier B.V. Solvent effects on the steady-state absorption and fluorescence spectra of uracil, thymine and 5-fluorouracil.

We report a comparison of the steady-state absorption and fluorescence spectra of three representative uracil derivatives (uracil, thymine and 5-fluorouracil) in alcoholic solutions. The present results are compared with those from our previous experimental and computational studies of the same compounds in water and acetonitrile. The effects of solvent polarity and hydrogen bonding on the spec...

Femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy of bacteriorhodopsin: Direct observation of excited state dynamics in the primary step of the proton pump cycle

A femtosecond fluorescence upconversion apparatus was used to measure the fluorescence decays in bacteriorhodopsin from Halobacterium hnlobium. The isotropic fluorescence measurements reveal a weak emission wavelength dependence from 680 nm to 900 nm (which spans most of the steady state fluorescence spectrum). The decays can be well fitted as a sum of three exponential decay components with ti...

Cytosine excited state dynamics studied by femtosecond fluorescence upconversion and transient absorption spectroscopy

We report a femtosecond spectroscopic study of the DNA base cytosine in aqueous solution at room temperature. Two different experimental techniques were used, fluorescence upconversion and transient absorption, providing complementary information on the excited state relaxation. While the fluorescence decay is clearly bi-exponential, with an ultrafast (0.2 ps) and a slower (1.3 ps) component, t...

Ab initio molecular dynamics and time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of electronically excited uracil and thymine.

The reaction dynamics of excited electronic states in nucleic acid bases is a key process in DNA photodamage. Recent ultrafast spectroscopy experiments have shown multicomponent decays of excited uracil and thymine, tentatively assigned to nonadiabatic transitions involving multiple electronic states. Using both quantum chemistry and first principles quantum molecular dynamics methods we show t...

Photon upconversion sensitized by a Ru(II)-pyrenyl chromophore.

The near-visible-to-blue singlet fluorescence of anthracene sensitized by a ruthenium chromophore with a long-lived triplet-excited state, [Ru(5-pyrenyl-1,10-phenanthroline)(3)](PF(6))(2), in acetonitrile was investigated. Low intensity non-coherent green light was used to selectively excite the sensitizer in the presence of micromolar concentrations of anthracene generating anti-Stokes, single...
